GOVERNING BOARDS: AVOIDING RISKS AND MAXIMIZING OPPORTUNITIES

 One of the greatest weaknesses across the nonprofit sector is the understanding of fiduciary and legal responsibilities that professionals assume in joining a board.  In recent years, the IRS has been putting greater focus on the role of the board.  It is the shared responsibility of managers and board members to understand best practices, to direct board development and to ensure compliance and active engagement of the board.  For all these reasons, along with finding efficient and effective ways to handle board management, this program will benefit board members and staff.  This program is applicable to 501 (c) (3)’s, (4)’s and (6)’s. 

Key program outcomes include:

·        Recognition of full scope of fiduciary responsibilities

·         Identifying tools and practices to manage board operations more effectively

 ·      Examining proactive approaches to management of board /  staff issues

 ·       Reviewing how to do an internal legal audit of your organization

Nonprofit professionals, board members and anyone whose work involves interaction with a board would benefit from attending this program.

Tish Mogan currently serves as Standards for Excellence Officer with the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO).  In this capacity, Tish directs PANO’s Standards for Excellence: the Ethics & Accountability program for the Nonprofit Sector.  Background work includes work in education and nonprofit administration.  Tish is an adjunct faculty member in Eastern University’s MS in Nonprofit Management program.  Tish earned her MA in Theology at St. Bonaventure University before earning her MBA in Nonprofit Management from Eastern University.

Attention Certified Providers: This course is approved to provide 3.0 organizational PDUs (Organizational Management) as explained in the Guidelines for Certification of Economic Development Organizations issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and in the Institute’s Policies and Procedures.
